Knowledge Base: Managing your meta information

Meta elements are an important part of the Search Engine Optimisation process.

The 3 most commonly used meta elements are the title of a page, the meta description and meta keywords.

About meta tags

Title

Page titles appear in the title bar of a user's browser, and also appear on search result pages as the main clickable link to your site. Page titles are considered important to search engines as they "crawl" your site, and you should try to have the most relevant words first.

Meta description

The meta description field gives search engines additional information about the contents of your site and each of it's pages. The description may also appear on search result pages so it should be a reasonably short, human readable sentance.

Meta keywords

Meta keywords should be a comma seperated list of words that are relevant to your content. This list should contain 10-20 keywords or there abouts.

How LabelEd handles meta information

LabelEd allows you to set meta information in a number of places and uses the information you've set in a particular priority order.

This order is as follows, with the deepest available information used in the final page.

  • Site element
    • Section element
      • Page element
        • Category
          • Item
